Cinema Info

In the beautiful courtyard of the historic Bethanien building on Mariannenplatz, film lovers from all over the city gather to enjoy the latest arthouse films, international classics, and award-winning movies under the open sky. With deck chairs, blankets, and a cool drink in hand, the relaxed atmosphere makes it an unforgettable experience for everyone. Our open-air cinema in Kreuzberg is the only one of its kind in Berlin that shows all films in their original language.

If you’ve never been, here is what need to know.

All films are shown with German or English subtitles. To find out which version will be screened, check the program. It’s listed directly below the movie title, to the left of the runtime and FSK (age rating).

Where we are:

The open-air cinema in Kreuzberg is located near the Kottbusser Tor subway station, in the courtyard of Kunstquartier Bethanien on Mariannenplatz. You can reach the cinema via Adalbertstraße, to the left of number 23a, or from Bethaniendamm. There is no access through the Bethanien building.

Bicycles:

Please secure your bike in front of the entrance to the cinema, using the bike racks provided to the left of the box office. Unfortunately, we cannot offer a formal guarantee in case of vandalism or theft. Under no circumstances may bicycles be taken onto the theater grounds.

Weather:

Screenings go ahead regardless of the weather. If need be, we sell one-way rain capes for 1,20€.

Admission, Box Office, Advance Tickets:

Box office sales and admission commence 30 minutes prior to the screening. The box office remains open for a further 40 minutes once the show begins. Tickets for all our screenings are available at the box office. We charge the same fair rate for advance and box office sales.

Multiple tickets for five or ten screenings may be acquired both at the box office and online. These allow you to book a ticket for a specific screening online or acquire it at the box office. Please note that these tickets are for multiple screenings, not for groups!

Multiple tickets for five or ten screenings acquired prior to 2022 are still valid at the box office but need to be activated to facilitate online use.

Concessions:

BerlinPass-conform tickets at a reduced rate are available online or at the box office for individuals in receipt of Bürgergeld, Grundsicherung, Arbeitslosengeld, Sozialhilfe, Leistungen pursuant to the Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz or Wohngeld.

You will be asked to present your up-to-date Berlin Ticket S (BVG or VBB) or a current Leistungsnachweis together with your ticket.

Ehrenamtskarte:

With the Ehrenamtskarte (for volunteer work) issued by the State of Berlin-Brandenburg, you receive a 50% discount on online tickets. You must present the Ehrenamtskarte along with a valid ID. Only this ID is accepted; no other substitute documents will be accepted.

Access/Assistance:

The cinema is wheelchair accessible. If you have an ID card marked B, please acquire a regular ticket online or at the box office. Your assistant will then receive a complimentary ticket at the box office. Our staff is happy to help you find suitable seating.

The cinema is equipped with an induction loop for users of hearing aids. To use it, please switch your hearing aid to 'T': Induktionsschleife für Hörgeräte

To use the induction loop, please choose seating within the first two rows of the middle block or the deck chair area right in front it.

Seating, Cushions, Blankets:

All of our tickets give you access to the seating of your choice!

There are approximately 300 deck chairs available. You can help yourselves to them from the stacks behind the kiosk. We kindly ask you to return them there after the screening. There is no guarantee that you will be able to get a deck chair. We recommend arriving early, even if you’ve already purchased a ticket in advance. If the lounge chairs run out, there are plenty of regular chairs available.

We have a huge number of cushions at our disposal. When screenings are particularly well attended, please bear in mind that every visitor should have access to a cushion!

In addition, we have some 300 fleece blankets you can borrow at no cost on a first come, first serve basis. These are not suited as underlay on the lawn.

Unfortunately, we cannot make cushions or blankets available when it rains (or is likely to rain).

Prams and Young Children are Welcome!

Ideally for parents, the combination of fresh air and the cinema’s soundscape puts many young children straight to sleep. You will find a changing table in the disabled toilet on the right-hand side behind the screen.

Smoking:

Smoking is prohibited in all seating areas, both in the deck chair section and the fixed seats. If you do wish to smoke, please use the park benches next to the kiosk and be sure to use an ashtray, which you can obtain at the recycling point.

Dogs:

Provided they do not cause a nuisance and are kept on a leash, dogs may be brought along.

Age ratings:

You will find the Self-regulatory Body of the German Film Industry’s criteria for the age ratings here.
