If it had been up to us to award the Oscars...

Trying to offer a succinct summary of our favourite movie this season is no mean feat. For starters, its title notwithstanding, it is not a spy movie. It focusses on Marcelo, who returns to his hometown of Recife, where he moves into a very special shared housing project run by an elderly lady. He hopes to find his son in the city and intends to plan his escape from 1970s Brazil. Its enigmatic admixture of flashbacks, new encounters, constantly changing circumstances and fast-paced events makes this an enthralling, intelligently narrated and suspenseful movie.

P. T. Anderson's Oscar mega success with Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro.

Bob's wild days as a political activist have long since passed. His semi-paranoid stoner existence is thrown off kilter when his daughter disappears. What can he do but revive his old revolutionary contacts? To our delight as cinema viewers, this turns out to be altogether more difficult than anticipated. Winner of this years' Oscars for best movie, best director, best adapted screenplay, best supporting actor (for a performance by Sean Penn that is out of this world) and best casting. "A swaggering, funny and timely action epic" The Independent "Wild, fast-paced, full of suspense. 5 film rolls!" radioeins

A superlatively brilliant, wacky, wild and funny film by Yorgos Lanthimos with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

So, the plot of this movie, which could not be better suited to the open-air experience, goes roughly like this: a hobby beekeeper (Jesse Plemons) abducts a high-flying business woman (Emma Stone), whom he holds responsible not only for bee decline but also for his mother's circumstances and the state of the world in general. What he has not counted on, however, are her negotiating skills—and the scene is set for this season's most fast-paced movie face-off.

Fatih Akin's ravishing, poetic and illuminating film with a stellar performance by Laura Tonke.

When a serene, poetic and in some respects distinctly northern German film both receives rave reviews at its premiere in Cannes and goes on to win the Bavarian Film Award, one should take note—and head straight to the cinema! The movie focusses on twelve-year-old Nanning who encounters the changes occurring in the final phase of the Second World War with a striking combination of naivety and obstinacy. Above all, he is keen to please his mother. "Amrum features gorgeous landscape and nature photography by Karl Walter Lindenlaub (Independence Day). Images of the sun setting on the tidal flat, the wind in the dunes, beatles on blades of grass, aquatic birds on the beach and the colours of the majestic sky lend the film a profound radiance." kinozeit

Vampires, a juke joint and black history: Michael B. Jordan (Oscar 2026) excels twice over in Ryan Coogler’s visually stunning Southern epos. Wild and political with plenty of Blues & bite!

In 1932, following a long career in organized crime, the twins Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan!) retire from Chicago to rural Mississippi to make a fresh start in their hometown. They open a bar in an old barn that serves bootleg alcohol to the black community who can certainly use a protected space of its own, given the pervasive discrimination and ever-present terror of the Ku Klux Klan. Yet then an entirely different threat makes itself known. The new movie by Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER) is a magnificent blend of action film and subversive horror thriller. "You’ll rarely come across popcorn cinema this dynamic, full of surprise and thematically substantive!” (Epd Film)

This effortless film about first love, between Leo and his father’s assistant, played out in the sun-drenched lethargy of an Italian summer, has enchanted our hopelessly romantic hearts. Swoon.

A sensual movie of emotions, based on a subtle screenplay by veteran script writer James Ivory (Maurice, Howards End, Room with a View), set in northern Italy in 1983: the Perlmans are spending the summer in their well-appointed villa. "Smart and bold, intense and wild. This is precisely the debut we hoped for from Kristen Stewart as a filmmaker." Filmstarts

In her directorial debut, Kristen Stewart has adapted the autobiography of the writer and swimmer Lidia Yuknavitch in a manner transcending the established conventions of the biopic. Instead of offering a linear biography, the film is narrated from the central protagonist's subjective vantage in a corporeal, fragmentary and intimate manner.
Lidia grows up in 1970s Oregon in an environment shaped by violence and alcohol. As a talented swimmer, she seeks refuge in the water, yet pain and self-harm continue to haunt her. It is only when she starts to write that she is able to make sense of her own story and find a language for her experiences of trauma and loss.

There is nothing heroic about Micha, whose video store is about to go bust. Restored and newly digitised, Wim Wenders' Berlin classic with Bruno Ganz, Otto Sander, and Peter Falk is as beautiful and touching as ever.

Two angels, Damiel (Bruno Ganz) and Cassiel (Otto Sander), traipse through a divided Berlin, observing the people and listening to their thoughts. But when Damiel falls in love with the trapeze artist Marion, he begins to feel a desire to become human. He relinquishes his immortality to experience the things he can’t have as an angel: earthly existence and the sensuous experience of being human....

The New York Times described this graceful, smart and entertaining independent movie by Eva Victor as being "like a gift". Quite right, don't miss it!

A traumatic experience throws the life of Agnes, a young professor of literature, off track. While it's soon business as usual again for those around her, she feels stuck. In five chapters, the movie tracks Agnes's progress as she finds herself again—relying on sharp humour and the indefatigable support of her best friend: did you bring a cat to the grocery store?
"Agnes is no victim. This film shows how mind and body heal. Eva Victor's approach is sensitive and courageous." radio3

This beautiful film about friendship, first love and the force of music garnered the audience awards at both the Sundance and Sarajevo film festivals.

Ahmet is very quiet and reserved. And very determined. For example, when it comes to transcending the stifling confines of his small North Macedonian village; to protecting his little brother; and to finding a way for Aya to avoid an arranged marriage.
With the help of many of the inhabitants of a small North Macedonian village, Georgi M. Unkovski has made a heart-warming and beautiful film that stands out as a world cinema highlight. "A feel good movie that shows life coming unstuck at first but then really coming into its own" BR kinokino

We were impressed to rediscover how well directed this great film actually is. Welcome to a great movie night!

When this (Berlin) classic appeared in cinemas in 1981 (three years after the publication of the book) it caused quite a storm. This great German independent film by director Uli Edel develops its strong narrative power by constantly keeping its young protagonist at the centre of attention. With its sounds of the discotheque, the Deutschlandhalle, and its perspective on West Berlin, this film is a cinematic event.
