Rafiki (the title means "friend” in Swahili) is the first Kenyan film to be shown at Cannes. In Kenya, where homosexuality is still a punishable offence, the film was initially banned and was only released after the director filed a lawsuit. Based on an award-winning short story, Rafiki tells the story of an African girl who resolutely rebels against homophobia, religious dogmas, and the severity of her parents. A captivating film that positively shines with love of freedom and joie de vivre in all the colours of the rainbow.
